I’ve been spending the last four months with one particular woman in the field. She’s got a firely character, and neighbors know they shouldn’t mess with her. With time, curiosity has grown into respect, and respect into a very deep affection. My favorite time of the day are the afternoons in which we sit or lie side by side – peeling beans or just resting in the shade. We can’t talk much. She doesn’t speak English, and my command of her language is quite restricted, too. But somehow we don’t need to talk at all. We look each other in the eyes, we smile, we touch, and listen to the sounds around us – the usual dog, kids, birds, the wind, and it’s all just perfect.
It breaks my heart to think that one day we’ll have to say good bye, and I’ll turn to leave not knowing when I’ll see her and her family again. But once love has settled, it will follow us on our journeys, and eventually will bring us back again.
